About the Show

In 1952, as America emerges from World War II confident and wealthy but also suspicious of real or imagined threats to the conservative status quo, Shirley Miller wins a coveted position on a show produced for a new medium called television. Initially Shirley thinks that her talent and abilities have landed her the job, but she soon learns that her physical appearance may have had more to do with it than she would like to believe.

“Miss Shirley Miller” is the story of a successful career woman in an era when successful women were as unexpected as they were threatening. Ultimately, as the years roll on and American society becomes buffeted by the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, women’s liberation, and the AIDS crisis, Shirley can only ask herself if her losses have outweighed her gains. Both funny and heartbreaking, Shirley’s story is the story of anyone who ever wanted to pursue a dream, only to discover that dreams always come with a price.
